Full Program Itinerary
|Day One – Journey to Costa Rica|
|Today we will fly to San Jose, Costa Rica. Upon arrival we will be met by our guide who will accompany us to our hotel in San Jose where we will enjoy a welcome dinner before getting a good night’s rest.|
|Day Two – Orphaned Children, a Volcano and Hot Springs|
|After a morning briefing with our guide, our Costa Rica adventure begins with local interaction!
Later, after lunch, we will begin our journey north to Arenal Volcano. The 3-hour drive is beautiful and our guide will make good use of the journey by helping us discover and learn a lot about Costa Rica along the way.
This evening, we’ll step into an exotic setting at Baldi Hot Springs. Here, the many warm mineral pools of varying temperatures – each heated by magma in the earth’s interior – are set among manicured tropical gardens. It’s a perfect way to unwind after a busy and challenging day!
Tonight, we’ll sleep in the shadow of Arenal Volcano.
|Day Three – Animal Rescue and Rural Schools|
|This morning we will visit a rescue center for orphaned and injured animals. This will be a prime opportunity to learn about the fauna of Costa Rica. If we’re lucky, we’ll get up close and personal with the wildlife as we help with feeding the animals and cleaning their cages.
This afternoon, our guide will introduce us to Arenal Volcano National Park. This distinctive cone-shaped volcano is one of the most famous sites in Costa Rica, and every inch of the park has fascinating things to teach us about biology, geology, vulcanology, climate and history. There is so much to see and do, this afternoon will fly by in a blink!
|Day Four – Kayak Lake Arenal and an Adventure in the Sky|
|This morning, we will kayak on Arenal Lake. Embrace the great outdoors and enjoy the amazing, one-of-a-kind views of Arenal Volcano.
Pristine Arenal Lake is the largest and most important lake in the country. In 1974, this man-made reservoir was created to provide hydroelectric energy.
If wildlife is your thing, you’re in for a treat. The area around Arenal Lake boasts a wide diversity of birds, both resident and migratory, such as the flycatcher, the kingfisher, the Great Blue Heron and the Aninga. If we’re lucky, we’ll see some mammals as well, such as Howler Monkeys!
Whether you’re new to kayaking or it’s an activity you already love, you’ll enjoy seeing Arenal Volcano and the local flora & fauna at its best.
Then we’ll set out to one of the most beautiful valleys in Costa Rica with the picturesque La Fortuna Waterfall. We will hike into the rainforest where we may spot toucans, oropendolas and monkeys in the trees.
Our trek concludes at the base of the 230ft high waterfall which cascades into a pool below. Here we will have time for a swim in the refreshing natural pool, fed by the La Fortuna River. You can swim right up to the cascading waterfall – it’s brilliant!
Later we’ll venture into the rainforest for a unique canopy tour. Our adventure begins on the Sky Tram, an open air gondola which transports us to the highest point of the Arenal Reserve.
From the top of the gondola we will Zipline through the Rain Forest! This incredibly exciting adventure includes 8 cross-sectional cables that together have a total length of just under 2 miles! The longest cable is 2,500 ft in length and over 650 ft from the rainforest floor.
During the Zipline experience, our specialized naturalist guideswill point out the unique fauna and flora of the area. Deer, monkeys, snakes, sloths, frogs, peccaries, raccoons and a great variety of birds are just some of the animals that can be seen during the tour.
|Day Five – Waterfall Rappel and Canyoning|
|This morning we don our safety helmets and trek through the forest to some of the most spectacular waterfalls in Costa Rica, a place very few people get to experience. Along the way we will have the chance to discover the secrets that lie hidden deep within the canyon.
Soon we will encounter our first waterfall where we will harness up and rappel into the beautiful and pristine canyon below. We have 5 rappels, 4 of which are alongside (or right in!) waterfalls, and one dry rock face.
At the end of the experience we have a short trek out of the canyon to reach the 4×4 vehicles which will transport us to base camp.
After a hearty lunch, we’ll motor around Lake Arenal en route to Monteverde, where we will spend two nights in a rustic lodge high in the Costa Rican Cloud Forest!
|Day Six – Monteverde Cloud Forest & Bat Jungle|
|This morning we hike right into the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, on a mission to discover and explore the almost-unimaginable range of ecosystems and unique biodiversity found here.
The cloud forest has more biodiversity than even the Amazonian Rain forest, and we will learn about the many plant and animal species in the area. You. Will. Marvel.
If we’re lucky, we might see the beautiful Quetzal, the Three-Wattled Bell Bird, or the Black-Faced Solitaire. Equally impressive is the unique flora of orchids, bromeliads, and strangler figs, a sensory experience which only adds to this forest’s already mysterious beauty.
This afternoon, we will learn first hand about the incredible world of bats at the Bat Jungle! You may be surprised to learn how many bat species can coexist in this region, and as they fly though the jungle environment, you’ll observe how they socialize and even how mama bats nurse their young. If you’ve never spent time around bats before, a whole new wildlife world might take shape before your eyes.
|Day Seven – Jaco and the Pacific Coast|
|Today we will pack our things and bid goodbye to the Cloud Forest as we journey to explore the Pacific Coastal Area of Costa Rica.
We’ll cover lot of fascinating ground today as we transport to a new area of the country, but we’ll learn a lot along the way. In Costa Rica, a motor coach is just a big, fancy, rolling classroom with fascinating views around every corner!
After checking into our resort hotel, we’ll have a chance to explore the sprawling grounds and take a swim before dinner.
We want to get a good night’s sleep tonight; tomorrow is packed with adrenaline and fun!
|Day Eight – Hang Ten in Costa Rica!|
|The Jaco (“ha-co”) area of Costa Rica is famous for its surfing. Jaco is world renowned for having consistent waves and an easy beach break along with moderate currents.
When in Jaco, you just have to take a surfing lesson! This morning, we’ll walk to the beach where our expert instructors await. These masters in the art of surfing will show us the techniques required to be up & surfing in no time at all. Before you know it, you’ll be catching waves up and down Jaco beach.
At the end of the lesson, we’ll have time to relax on the beach and swim in the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean.
In the late afternoon, in our own private cooking class, we will learn the secrets of preparing popular local Costa Rican dishes. You’ll want to pay attention in this class, because you’ll be in charge of preparing your own dinner!
|Day Nine – San Jose, Costa Rica|
|Adventure activities always create an opportunity for personal growth, and Costa Rica is packed with adventure!
This morning, we’ll reinforce some of those lessons and learn more about ourselves as our guide leads us through team-building activities.
Then we’ll drive back to San Jose, where we’ll spend our last night in this fascinating country. This afternoon we’ll have time for shopping & souvenir hunting as we visit San Jose’s Central Market.
Our farewell dinner will be at our hotel.
|Day Ten – Adios, amigos!|
|Today we’re homeward bound!
Breakfast at the hotel before heading to the airport for our flight back to the USA.
