Full Program Itinerary

Day One: Bon Voyage!
Today we depart on a journey to discover the roots of Western Civilization as we board our international flight from Spokane, bound for “the Eternal City” – Roma, Italia!
Day Two: Benvenuto, Italia!
Arrive late morning into Rome.

  • Begin with an orientation tour of the city, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
  • Visit the ancient ruins of the Baths of Caracalla, which were built in AD212. This was a massive public bath, where fresh water arrived via aqueducts and was heated in elaborate underground hypocausts.
  • Tonight, we’ll enjoy a distinctly Roman “Welcome to Italy” dinner!

Time to grab some serious shut-eye, as we have a big day planned tomorrow.

Day Three: Roma, Eterna!
We’ll wake early this morning to visit the world’s smallest country: Vatican City. Welcome to the heart of the global Catholic Church.

  • Begin with the incomparable Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel.
  • Enter St. Peter’s Basilica, the most important church in the Catholic faith.
  • Explore St. Peter’s Square.
  • See perhaps the most famous of Michelangelo’s works: “The Pieta.”

This afternoon, we’ll see an abundance of Rome’s ancient architecture.

  • Enter the Colosseum – perhaps the most important site in all the Roman Empire! Our expert guide offers riveting historical context. Imagine: gladiator combat, wild animal fights, chariot races, executions, and every form of excess in the days of Rome’s “bread and circuses.”
  • Stroll through the Roman Forum. Once the teeming heart of ancient Rome, this was the site of triumphal processions and glorious political elections. See the sprawling ruins of important architecture such as the Arches of Septimius Severus & Titus, the Temple of Antonius Pius & Faustina and the Temple of Saturn.
Day Four: Pompeii
This morning, we rise early and make our way to Pompeii, Mount Vesuvius’ most famous victim.

  • When the volcano on Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79AD, it rained ash and stone. The city was completely destroyed and buried beneath the searing hot debris.
  • Today Pompeii provides an astounding glimpse into the everyday life and extraordinary death of those living in the Roman Empire nearly 2,000 years ago.
  • As excavation continues to unearth the wonders of Pompeii, we’ll get an up-close look at scientists’ discoveries, their processes, and future plans.

This evening we will enjoy dinner and a good night’s sleep in the beautiful Bay of Naples.

Day Five: Vesuvius & an Overnight Ferry
Our day begins with a visit to Mount Vesuvius, one of Europe’s few active volcanoes.

  • Enjoy amazing views of the volcano that buried Pompeii in the eruption of 79AD.

We’ll travel through the countryside of southern Italy as we journey to the port of Bari.

  • Here, we’ll board an overnight ferry to Patras, Greece.

This evening, enjoy dinner and a good night’s sleep in private cabins onboard the ferry, as the Mediterranean rocks us to sleep.

Day Six: Greece!
This morning we’ll switch gears from the Empire of the Romans to the earlier Civilization of the Greeks, while marveling at the astounding turquoise and blue of the Mediterranean.

After lunch we’ll land at Patras and begin to immerse ourselves in Greek history and culture.

  • Begin with a guided visit to the city of Olympia, where the first Olympic Games took place in 776 BC. That’s nearly 2,800 years ago!
  • We’ll see the ruins of the Temple of Zeus
  • Jaws will drop as we enter an incredible athletic stadium that was constructed more than 200 years BC.

We’ll enjoy our first succulent & savory Greek dinner tonight, and we’ll overnight in Olympia.

Day Seven: Greek Engineering
Today we’ll head to the Argolis region of Greece.

  • In Nafplio, we’ll be amazed by ancient Greeks’ engineering achievement at the Theatre of Epidaurus.
  • This theatre is an ancient marvel because of its exceptional acoustics, which permit almost perfect intelligibility of the unamplified spoken word from the stage to all 15,000 spectators, regardless of their seat.

After lunch, we will explore the picturesque seaport town of Nafplio.

On our way back to Athens, we’ll admire the slightly more modern engineering of the astonishing Corinthian Canal.

Day Eight: Athens, The Gods & The Acropolis
Our Athenian adventure begins with a guided tour of the majestic Acropolis and the beautiful Parthenon, which symbolize the glory of ancient Greece. Time to update your Bucketlist!

  • Our guide will instruct us on the historical, religious and secular significance of each building we encounter on this reverent site.
  • We’ll also learn about the sophisticated techniques being employed by Greek archaeologists as they work to restore and preserve these precious ruins.

Visit the Acropolis Museum, representing sculpture, art and architecture from a significant segment of human history.

  • See one of the world’s greatest masterpiece collections from the Archaic and Classical periods.

Prepare to marvel at the Temple of the Olympic Zeus.

Tonight, a special dinner featuring Athenian delights!

Day Nine: Delphi
At the foot of Parnassos, Delphi was once the sanctuary of the famed Pythia – the soothsaying high priestess (or Oracle) of Apollo. Once the focus of countless pilgrimages, no major political decisions were made in ancient Greece without first consulting The Oracle of Delphi.

Explore essential and impressive sites such as:

  • Temple of Apollo (Delphi’s most important monument, dedicated to the god of music and truth, source of the oracle’s prophesies)
  • Temple of Athena Pronaia (where pilgrims would offer sacrifices before petitioning Pythia)
  • The Castalian Spring (a mountain spring where worshippers of Apollo would drink and bathe in mineral water before entering the temple)
  • The Delphi Archaeological Museum (see the perfectly intact bronze statue of the Charioteer (470 BC), the Large Sphynx of Naxos, and the two identical man-sized Kouroi)

Tonight, we will enjoy a very special Farewell Dinner in Athens.

Day Ten: Naftikó Taxídi!
At Athens International Airport, Eleftherios Venizelos, we’ll board our flight back to the US.
